Description
June '04
Queen Charlotte Islandsd BC
I'm walking on the great log of the Golden Spruce. Mind you I didn't quite realize it at the time.
The Golden Spruce is [or rather was] an ancient Sitka Spruce, very much like the other giants found in the achipelago. But this one was a mutant: instead of being green it's needles was a shade of warm gold, in essence an albino.
To the local Haida it was revered and theres a little path out in the woods you can walk to go see it- really quite pretty.
So we went, couldn't seem to find the tree so I hopped on this massive fallen tree blocking the pat. [I think you get an idea of how big it -and the other trees in the area- can get.]
What we found out later was that in '97 to protest something some guy took a chainsaw to it and mowed it down. [Nice huh?]
So you can take the path to the great Golden Log... which is a very long and impressive log indeed!
[And no I didnt realize what I was walking on, and ment no disrespect.]
